Teaching Designs
(Unit 6,7B)
The First Period
Content: Comic strip and Welcome to this unit
Teaching aims:
1.      To use the comic strip to introduce the function of giving instructions---‘ bring me…’ and  ‘should’.
2.      To introduce students to the world of pets
3.      To identify names of animals and typical features
4.      To understand differences in animal features
5.       To educate  students  that  most  animals  are  our  friends
Language focus: bring me my lunch/be more polite/get a new e-dog./You should say…/You ought to be…take care of/learn more about different pets watch it swim around/sleep on the lap /feed carrots/ hold …in my  hand
Vocabulary: pet/parrot/rabbit/lap/carrot/feed/hold/ought to
Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Warming up
Play a game called: Bring me …
Step 2 Presentation
Look at some pictures about Hobby and Eddie.
Let Ss guess the meaning of “ought to”
Step 3 Comic strip
First listen to the tape to get some information from the listening and then ask questions:
1. What does Eddie want to do?
2.How does Hobo answer?
3.Is Eddie polite? What does Eddie say for the second time?
4.Hobo took lunch for Eddie at last, didn’t he? What do you think of Eddie?
Listen to the tape again and read after it. Pay attention to Eddie’s intonation.
Let Ss understand that one should say “please” when he wants others’ help.
Step 4 Learning “Different pets”.
Some riddles: 1. What animal swings from tree to tree?
2. What animal gives us milk?
3. What animal has the longest neck?
4. What animal is the king?
5. What animal wakes you up in the morning?
6.       What animal gives us pork?
Encourage students to do the task on Part A. Then ask students to read out their answers together 
Ask questions about pictures to help the students to know the typical features:
①    Can a parrot speak? Is it a kind of birds?  Do you like listening to birds singing ?
②    What does a rabbit eat? What colour is a rabbit?
③    Do you have a dog at home?
④    What does a mouse eat ? Are mice afraid of cats?
⑤    What food does a cat like eating?
⑥     Where does a goldfish live? Does a goldfish sleep with their eyes open? Why?
Free talk: What’s your favourite pet? How do you like it? Why?
Present some parts of pictures about pets and guess what it is.
Then describe the pets in English as much as one can..
Step 5 Talk about pets
Get Ss to tell the names of different parts of body, such as head,face,nose,eyes,mouth,eyelids,teeth,ears,hair,neck,arms,hands,chest,fingers,knee,leg,feet,toes……
Get Ss to look at the pictures on Part A (P93).
Then get Ss to say the plural form of these animals and find out the special form of “goldfish” and “mouse”
Step 6 Match the reasons with the animals
Get Ss to do Part B (P89) individually. Then check the answers.
Step 7Discussion
Get Ss to work in groups to talk about their favourite pets and why they like them.
Then some group leaders report the information about their groups.
Step 8 Make a survey
To see how many students in class have kept pets and what pets they are.
Step 9 Assignment:
1.Recite  the  dialogue  on  page 88  and  some  important  sentences  on  page 89 .
2.Write  3-4  sentences  about  your  pet .
 
 
The Second Period
Content: Reading-- A brave girl
Teaching aims:
1. To learn about rhyme schemes, stress and intonation of poems
2. To read the poems about pets and understand the main ideas.
3.To read about animal behaviour.
4.To learn new vocabulary to talk about pets
Language points and focus:
with eyes open wide/do wonderful tricks/look after/chase and catch a ball
My dog is the cleverest animal of all.
He hunts when I hide.
Teaching procedures
Step 1.Revision
Revise what the children learned in the last period.
1.bring me my lunch              2.be more polite
  3.get a new e-dog                 4.take care of
  5.watch it swim around            6.sleep on the lap
  7.feed her carrots                 8.play with sb.

1. Warming up: Talk about the favourite pets.
2. Watch a set of pictures about some pets to present the new words:
chase,hunt,hide,build,bite,bubble, care,butch,trouble,stick, camp,trick,wide,empty,end.anywhere,
window-ledge,edge,drawer.
3.  Read the poems about pets and try to get some information. Try to answer the following questions.
1). What is the dog like?
2). What does he do when I hide?
3). Would he bark or bite?
4). Does the goldfish need a bed?
5). Where do cats sleep?
6). Do they sleep in the cupboard?
4.        Read after the tape. Pay more attention to rhyme schemes, stress and intonation of poems.
   Then get some Ss to read it aloud with feelings.
Step 3 Consolidation
1.  Get Ss to do Part B1(P91) individually. Then check the answers with the whole class and write the same sounds after them.
2.       Get Ss to read the poem “My dog” again and make sure if they can understand each sentence. Then get Ss to do Part C1 (P92) individually.
3.       Get Ss to read the poem “My goldfish” again and find out why Peter likes his goldfish. Then get Ss to do Part C2 (P92) individually and check the answers in pairs.
4.       Get Ss to read the poem “Cats” again and find out the different places cats sleep. Then get Ss to do Part C3 (P92) individually and check the answers on the Bb(A student writes them).
5.       Get Ss to do Part B2 (P91) individually and check the answers.
Step4 Discussion
  Discuss in pairs. Talk about their own pets. What do you think of the pets? Do you think it necessary for people to keep pets? Why/Why not?
