Hello, everyone. I’m very pleased to have an opportunity to talk about some of my teaching ideas. My topic is “Shopping online” taken from JEFC Book 3 Lesson 54. I’ll talk about the following parts. 

First, I’ll talk about my understanding of this teaching material

This is a reading passage. It plays a very important role in the English teaching of this unit. Students can improve their reading ability. They are going to do some listening, speaking and writing too.

Teaching aims of this lesson:

1. Aims of the knowledge: Students will be able to understand the main idea of the text, the grammar of the Past Perfect Tense, some important phrases and sentences.

2. Aims of the abilities: Students will be able to retell the text in their own words. And they will be able to use the phrases and sentences in the real situations.

3. Aims of the emotions: Students will be able to know how to protect themselves when they are shopping online.

III. Key points and difficult points:

1. Teach the grammar of the Past Perfect Tense.

2. Discuss how to order a Nokia mobile phone online.

3. Understand the text and retell it in their own words.

V. Something about the students:

1. The students have known something about the Internet.

2. They are lack of vocabulary.

3. Most of them don’t often use English to express themselves and communicate with others.


 

4. Some of them are not active in the class because they are afraid of making mistakes.

Now next, I’ll talk about my teaching opinions, methods and aids

While dealing with the lesson, I’ll do my best to carry out the following teaching opinions: 1. Make the students be the real masters in class while the teacher herself acts as a director. 2. Combine the language structures with the language functions. 3. Let the students know how to protect themselves from being treated while shopping online.

I’ll take the Task-based learning approach and cooperative learning in my teaching. And I’ll use some teaching aids, such as a tape recorder, CAI and so on.

Now let me talk about my teaching procedures.

Step1. Have a brainstorm.

Show a list of pictures of places in Beilun on the screen for three times. And then ask some questions, such as “What does Lucy do? Where has she ever been to? Where else has she been to?...”Students answer the questions. And at last ask them to make up a story of “Lucy’s traveling”. They can say “Lucy is a middle school student now. She has been to many places of interest in Beilun. She has been to….” In this step, I want to revise the Present Perfect Tense. The familiar places of Beilun can arouse the students interest. And they are eager to express themselves. And next I will lead in the Past Perfect Tense.

Step2. Play a guessing game.

I present “I like traveling too. I have traveled a lot of places of interest in China. Before I was 20 years old, I had traveled to&

hellip;.And I had been to… Can you guess where else I had traveled to?

The students are expected to answer “You had been to… You had traveled to…”

And I will use the expressions of “You are right. You are great. You are clever. You are so good.”ect to encourage them.

Of course I will let them have a group competition in this step. Students practice the Past Perfect Tense unconsciously in this way. I think it’s a good beginning. I believe “Well begun is half done.”

Step3. Watch a short video program

Now watch a short video program and then discuss with your partner about “how to do shopping on the Internet or we can say how to do shopping online.” In this step, students are going to learn something about shopping online. They are able to review how to search information on the Internet and learn some knowledge about shopping on line. At the same
 

time, they are able to learn some new words and phrases, such as ad, advertisement, credit, fill in the from, personal information and so on. After this step, students are expected to know more about shopping online and express their personal opnions in their own words. E.g We can use credit cards to pay for something online. We must type in our personal information correctly.

Step 4 Listen and fill in the blanks

Listen to “Miyoko’s shopping online” and fill in the blanks. Then students report it to the whole class.

Step 5 Reading comprehension

Show some questions on the screen, such as “What did Miyoko decide to buy online? Why didn’t she buy it in a store? How long had she searched the Internet before she found an ad?” and so on. Students read the passages by themselves several times and answer the questions. They are expected to use the Past Perfect Tense to answer some of the questions. After that, I’ll ask some of them to retell the text in their own words.

Step 6 Pair work

I present the Past Perfect Tense by saying that “ It is eleven now. And it was 10 o’clock just now. I had eaten my breakfast before 10 o’clock..” Point out the Past Perfect Tense is made up of “had +past participle.”

Students ask and answer: What had you done before 10 o’clock?

I had ….

What had your mother done before 10 o’clock?

She had…

What had … done before...?

Students practise the Past Perfect Tense in the real situation. They communicate with each other very often. Everyone have a chance to speak English
 

Step 7 Listening Comprehension

Listen to the tape and fill in the blanks. Pay attention to “What had Jim done by the end of last Christmas holiday?” “What had he done by the time his parents went back home?”

After this step, students can have a good understanding of the Past Perfect Tense and develop their listening ability.

Step 8 Fill in the blanks with the right verb forms in your paper.

Students practice the Past Perfect Tense by some exercises. After this step, students will be able to master Past Perfect Tense better.

Step 8 Group work

In groups of four, discuss how to search information on the Internet. And write down a report about how to search information about the Nokia Mobile phone on the Internet, then report it to the whole class.

In this step, I want to revise how to search information on the Internet. Students can use English in the real situation and use English to solve real problems.

Step 9 To order a Nokia mobile phone on the Internet/online

In groups of four, discuss how to order a mobile phone online. Then write an article and report it to the whole class.

In this step, I want to let the students understand how to order something online and the procedures of shopping online. After finishing this task, students can know more about the Internet and shopping online.
